I heart Jonathan

I saw an article this week about March Madness and all the NCAA mascots and they were ranked for what they bring to the team and which ones aren't so great. You can see the article here. Well, they ranked by friend Jonathan the Husky from UConn just about in the middle of the pack of mascots they were saying aren't so great. This saddens me. I will admit that my affection for Jonathan is probably the top 5 dorky things about me but he makes me smile. He has this way of walking and gesturing that gets the crowd involved and it just makes me laugh. Maybe I have an inner desire to be a mascot. That's weird, right? But how fun would it be to be anonymous and do things that you wouldn't typically do in your everyday life? Mascots are important in sports, it's a long tradition. Some believe that the idea of mascots goes back to the Caveman or the very least have been used for all sorts of things since their introduction sometime in the late 1800s. The term ‘mascot’ was integrated into the English language after Edmund Audran wrote a comic operetta entitled "La Mascotte." The Webster's dictionary describes them as “a person, animal, or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure especially to bring them good luck.” The best fact I discovered is that the San Diego Padres' Chicken, who first appeared in the early 1970s, is acknowledged to be the first and best-known of all sporting mascots, states the Forbes.com website. A chicken, people! A chicken! We all know how I love my chickens, but that is for another day, another post. Read more here. Think what you will but some traditions are just right.
